CONVENTIONAL DRIVE TECHNOLOGY
Alternator drive has been the technology used for generating electricity for refrigeration since the FRIGOBLOCK Grosskopf GmbH was formed. Like an electric generator, the alternator is integrated in the belt drive of the truck engine. As the truck engine revs up, the rotary frequency of the alternator increases and generates voltage and amperage.

The frequency provided by the alternator is directly fed to the electric motors for compressor, fan and blower. Consequently, these units rotate at a frequency that depends on the speed of the truck engine. When supplied from the electric mains, the speeds are constant due to the constant frequency of 50 Hz.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF ALTERNATOR DRIVE?
  • Absorption of electric power from the truck engine in
    • idle (standstill)
    • acceleration
    • constant speed, or
    • overrun mode.
  • More energy efficient than compared with an external industrial diesel combustion engine
  • Low-noise operation (slight extra noise emission)
  • Utilization of the high efficiency of a truck engine compared with an industrial diesel engine
  • The drive of the components by electric motors and the absence of a diesel engine...
    • permit the installation of heat exchangers with larger surfaces. This reduces the pressure level in the refrigeration system which, in turn, extends the life of the refrigeration compressor and of other components.
    • Avoids any critical increase in compresser discharge gas temperature due to heat emitted by the engine = more refrigeration capacity.
    • Enables the complete integration of the evaporators in the refrigeration system and double-deck loading of goods up to the bulkhead.
    • Reduces wear by up to 50% in comparison with the start-stop mode of the diesel engine.


WHAT ARE EFFECTS OF VARIABLE ROTATIONAL FREQUENCIES?
On the one hand, the rotational frequency of the refrigeration system is a function of the engine speed and, on the other hand, compressor, fan and blower are running at the same speeds. Consequently, the output of the refrigeration system varies. It would be desirable if the system was controlled at the most efficienct operating point. The inverter technology enables speed control of the components as a function of the refrigeration output.


INVERTER-OPERATED REFRIGERATION MACHINES
The electric drive of the refrigeration machine has always had the advantage that the alternator supplies 400 Volt, i.e. 100% of the FRIGOBLOCK refrigeration capacity, when the truck engine is running at about 60 % of the rated speed and supplies sufficient power to the electric motors of the refrigeration system. With this technology, the control measures the temperature inside the loading space and turns off the compressor drive when the preset temperature is obtained. When the temperature in the loading space rises, the control turns on the compressor to provide new refrigeration.


An advantage is the electric drive of these components. The FRIGOBLOCK electric alternator drive has been operating successfully for over 30 years. The advantage of the electric drive of the refrigeration machine is that the alternator supplies 400 Volt, i.e. 100% of the FRIGOBLOCK refrigeration capacity. When the truck engine is running at about 60 % of the rated speed it provides sufficient power to the electric motors of the refrigeration system. In conventional refrigeration systems, the control measures the temperature in the loading space and turns off the compressor drive when the preset temperature is obtained. When the temperature in the loading space rises, the control turns on the compressor to provide new refrigeration. This technology has been practiced reliably for over 30 years.

Typical of the inverter technology: A frequency converter changes the frequency of the electric voltage without changing the voltage. The reaction of a three-phase motor to differences in frequency is a change of speed. Consequently, the inverter can control the speeds of all electric motors individually and smoothly as required in the range from 500 to 2,000 rpm. The electronic circuitry calculates the input on the basis of different parameters and provides the signal to set the required frequency. The refrigeration machine not only starts up in less time, an inverter-controlled refrigeration appliance can maintain the target temperature within closer limits with less energy.
